When she was 16 years old, Geraldine Marie Deveau left her home in Nova Scotia, Canada, moved to the United States and became a nanny for a dentist in Baldwin. She never left.

“She just came with a small bag of belongings and didn’t even have a passport,” said her son Danny. “She had to go back to Canada to get it.”

Danny said his mother carried that bravery and strength with her throughout her life.

Geraldine Marie (Deveau) Gillen died April 15, 2022. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Gillen was born in Nova Scotia, the daughter of Edmund and Rose Deveau.

Following her work as a nanny, she worked as an assistant in the dentist’s office.

She met her husband Harry at a Halloween dance. The couple were married less than a year later.

Following the death of her husband in 1974 at the age of 43, Mrs. Gillen went back to work to support the family. She got a job at Weis Instruments, manufacturers of thermometers and pressure gauges.

The family lived in Lindenhurst and she moved to Amityville 15 years ago.

Mrs. Gillen’s strength helped her through not only the sudden loss of her husband but also that of three children, Harry Jr., Jude and Linda.

“Her passion was her home, her friends and family,” said her son with whom she lived. “My house was a revolving door of people and friends coming and going and I think she met half of Amityville sitting on our front porch.”

Mrs. Gillen is survived by her son Danny and his wife Deborah of Amityville, William and his wife Grace of Mansfield, Texas, and by her grandchildren, Carol and Anthony Marino of Tampa; Karen of Louisiana; William and Michael of Mansfield, Texas; a great -grandchild Driston and by her son-in-law Donnelly Garic of Louisiana.

Mrs. Gillen reposed at the Powell Funeral home, 67 Broadway, Amityville. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, Rev. Father Gerard Gordon officiating. He was assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Burial followed in National Cemetery at Calverton.
