Local volunteers fight eight-alarm blaze in North Amityville

Eight-alarm blaze in North Amityville

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday, firefighters from eight departments responded to a blaze at the Gulf station at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Route 110.

Fire department sources said that several firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion and experienced smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene. One firefighter sustained burns and was taken to Nassau County Medical Center where he was treated and released, according to AFD Ass’t Fire Chief Gavin Budde.

Most of the fire was contained to an auto repair shop behind the mini mart. Inside there, several cars ignited, causing extensive heat and smoke.

“Once we realized that the vehicles were on fire, we called for extra resources,” said Budde.

Responding to the scene were the North Amityville, Amityville, Copiague, East Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Farmingdale Village, N Lindenhurst and Wyandanch departments.
