County closes local beaches because of poor water quality

Also announces mosquito spraying schedule

The Suffolk County Department of Health has closed several local beaches today, citing poor water quality. Closed were Amityville Village, Venetian Shores in Lindenhurst and Tanner Park in Copiague at 3:23 p.m. Copiague Harbor, and West Islip beaches were also closed.

In related matters, the S.C. Department of Public Works announced that it would be treating the following locations between today and Thursday with a low altitude, granular application of VectoPrime FG EPA, a pesticide designed to control mosquito larvae. Treated areas in Babylon include the Sore Thumb, Oak Beach, West Gilgo and Gilgo, Cedar Beach, the Cedar Beach Golf Course, and the Robert Moses Coast Guard Station.
