Babylon News & Muse

This week, I did something I haven’t done in years: locked myself out! Fortunately, I was dressed for the weather, but had no way to get in. Living near Village Hall is a mixed blessing. The highway and sanitation trucks start their engines about 4 a.m. and that can generate a lot of noise. But if something goes wrong, there are a lot of very nice people that are usually willing to help you out. Chief among them is Skip Gardner, the head of our public works department.

Skip was busy using a backhoe to repair a hole in a driveway when I approached him to help break into my house. He jumped down from the machine, got some screwdrivers and five minutes later I had my keys! Thanks again, Skip!

A lot of people were away for the winter break, many of them in the same place: Cancun. This was apparently more of a coincidence for many of the travelers, but I’ve seen a couple of great tans in the last few days so I guess they had good weather!

The Babylon Lions Club had a big crowd turn out for their 49th annual Pancake Breakfast, which has now been named the Gaspare Mennina Pancake Breakfast, after Babylon’s late, great shoe repair man! That’s very appropriate, since he was usually the first person behind the counter every year! The Lions did their usual great job and hopefully made tons of money!
