SC Health Commissioner cites high levels of bacteria

Amityville Village, Tanner Park, Venetian Shores and Copiague Harbor beaches have been identified with several other beaches in Suffolk today as being unsafe for bathing.

James L. Tomarken, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, says today that the beaches are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria:

Other beaches cited were Gold Star Battalion Park Beach in Huntington, Nathan Hale Beach Club in Huntington Bay, and Peconic Dunes County Park (Lake) in Southold.

Immersion in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, according to the county officials.
