Amityville 'horror" house for sale

Broker to limit access to serious buyers

Hundreds line up for a moving sale at 108 Ocean Avenue, Amityville in 2010.Hundreds line up for a moving sale at 108 Ocean Avenue, Amityville in 2010.The home at 108 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, the scene of the horrific DeFeo murders in 1974, is once again for sale. The listing agent is Coldwell Banker Harbor Light, and owner Jerry O’Neill said that showings would be through real estate brokers only.

“There is an application for appointments that will require buyers to provide financial qualifications, including mortgage pre-approval and proof of funds,” said O’Neill, who lives in Amityville.

The home, once the scene of the gruesome murders of the DeFeo family by the couple’s son Ronald Defeo, has become associated with hauntings and ghosts. It is the subject of several films, books and continued suggestions of the paranormal. A moving sale in 2010 drew hundreds of people who used the opportunity to get into the home and salve their morbid curiosity. Some even brought holy water, religious artifacts and other items to “cleanse” the home.

The Amityville community has consistently fought those images, calling the stories hoaxes and reminding the public that members of their community, including children, died there.

“We want to see that this (the sale) does not become a circus,” said O’Neill. “Only serious buyers will be able to get a showing to this beautiful waterfront property.”

The “stately, waterfront Colonial” is on the Amityville River. The listed price is $850,000. Real Estate taxes are $27,927.

There are 11 rooms; five bedrooms and 3 and a half baths, including a master bedroom suite, a family room and a heated sun porch. The property offers a large boathouse and slip and a 2-car garage.
