Town announces establishment of veterans home ownership assistance program
On June 22, 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, commonly known as the G.I. Bill of Rights. By the time the benefits of the bill expired in July 1956, 2.4 million veterans had home loans backed by the Veterans' Administration. That program led to the development of suburban communities across the country, including many on Long Island.
