Editorial: Are you ready for visit from Earl?
Being prepared for a major hurricane at your home, in your business and in your family is the best way to ensure your safety and comfort, to the best extent possible. Winging it is dangerous. That’s why local, county and state officials—and this newspaper—are asking residents to take some time over the next few days or so to be ready when and if Hurricane Earl strikes our area. Here are a few questions that can help. What would the impact on your life and your business be if the power went out for a few days?
What about in your home? Do you have a supply of canned goods and fresh water? Have you checked that you have enough batteries for flashlights, if needed? Have you prepared an emergency and “Go Kit” in the event you need to evacuate? Do you have a chronically ill or handicapped family member living with you who requires special medication or has other special needs? Do you have enough medication on hand? These and other questions are important for every family to review as Earl gets ready to barrel down on us. For more information, you can go to the Nassau (http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/) or Suffolk County (http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/) websites and learn how to be prepared.
Most of all, if we are struck by the storm, be safe, be sensible and be helpful.
