La Bella Palermo, now Pomodoro's, reopening soon
A representatives of the new owners of the former Italian restaurant, La Bella Palermo, 90 West Main St., Babylon, appeared before the Babylon Village Board Feb. 9, outlining plans to reopen the popular local Italian eatery. Actually, its plans are to continue providing the same kind of food and service to the public, with few changes to the operation.
“My clients are looking to operate the restaurant in the exact same way that has been previously operated,” said Frank Tini, an attorney from West Babylon, who represented the owners. “We are planning nothing more than a new face in the front and a new name, Pomodorino.”
Tini said the restaurant is awaiting receipt of its liquor license and should be open by early spring.
In 2002, the Village granted approval for the restaurant to offer catering on the second floor, and the owners want to be able to continue that. “We are not looking to upset the apple cart; we are looking to make more friends here in Babylon,” said Tini.”
“You understand that we don’t want any loud music, any special nights or anything like that that will cause problems in the community,” Babylon Village Attorney Joel Sikowitz told Tini. “We are concerned about the quality of life of our residents who live nearby.”
“Not only is the Village mindful of the neighbors, but we are too,” responded Tini.
Seikowitz said the board would review the covenants and restrictions that were in place with the former corporation and asked Tini if his clients would adhere to them, to which he responded, “absolutely.”
The only public comments were made by the Finkenbergs of Prospect Street who asked Tini if his clients could so something about the strong barbecue smell that emanates from the building.
“In the spring and summer you get this wood-burning smoke odors and while it is not really a big problem, I was wondering if something could be done about it,” said Jack Finkenberg.
“We certainly will look into it and if there is anything we can to do ameliorate it, we will,” said Tini.
In other Village business, the board:
•announced that the Babylon Historical Society is preparing to honor the first Black Baseball team, which called Babylon its home. The event is scheduled for April 18;
•terminated two part-time highway and sanitation employees and accepted the resignation of part-time highway employee Anthony Fizzuoglio;
•granted permission to St. Joseph’s R. C. Church to hold the Stations of the Cross at Argyle Lake April 2 at 1:15 p.m. The board authorized Village employees to ensure that the area is cleaned and ready for the event; •approved the Little League parade for April 17, 1 p.m. The next Village Board meeting is Tues., March 9, 8 p.m., Village Hall.
