Dolores Biglan: beloved lifelong volunteer and active community member

Dolores Biglan Dolores Biglan Brightwaters resident and lifelong avid volunteer member Dolores Biglan died Jan. 22, 2010. She was 98 years old and had lived in Brightwaters for more than 45 years.

As an active community member, she served on the boards of the Suffolk County Mental Health Association, the LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, the Regina Cotillion, Catholic Charities, the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library Club and the Music Lovers Society. She also served as the president of the Nazareth College Alumnae Society and president of the Officer’s Wives Club in the Bay Shore-Islip region.

In fact, even near the end of her life, she was still volunteering, something she loved to do, said her family.

“When she was last hospitalized, her friends at the Music Lovers Society called and asked her to be their secretary again,” laughed her daughter, Mary Catherine of West Bay Shore.

She was born to Eva Mae Baker Edell and William Jacob Edell in Rochester, New York and was a graduate of Nazareth College, the New York School of Social Work and Teacher’s College of Columbia University.

Mrs. Biglan was the Chief of Social Work at the Central Islip Psychiatric State Hospital and worked side by side with her husband, Dr. Albert M. Biglan, the assistant director. She served on the Governor’s Committee on problems of the aging in 1955 and was president of the Women’s Auxiliaries for both the Suffolk County Medical and the New York Medical societies. She had lived on the hospital grounds in Central Islip for more than 20 years, before moving to Windsor Avenue in Brightwaters.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Biglan also leaves behind her son, Dr. Albert W. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Alexander John and Margaret Eva and her great grandchildren, Alexander John and Michael James. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Albert Manley Biglan and her brother, William Oswald Edell.

She reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, West Islip on Jan. 24, 2010. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Bay Shore, on Jan. 25, 2010 followed by interment in National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
