Babylon News & Muse
Well the Super Bowl is over and there’s brief gap between football and March Madness (basketball), so it’s time to get your husband, boyfriend, etc to take care of all those little inside tasks. Let’s face it, after March Madness, they’ll start talking about working on the lawn, golf, all those other things that they’ll use as excuses to put off hanging those pictures, changing the furniture around…everything you’ve been after them to do since the end of the summer (if not since last year, or the past five years)!
Not that the women don’t have things to do. When was the last time you went through your closet? (or, heaven forbid, your kids’ closet!) Haven’t you been meaning to arrange those kitchen shelves? While the winter weather continues, take advantage! My family will laugh at this, because I’m the worst procrastinator in the world!
•There are several birthdays this month. I can never forget Sue Berry of Cadman Avenue who celebrated her birthday on February 2nd (Ground Hog Day). Lee Bliss, Sr. celebrated with his family on his day, February 5th. Eldest son, Lee, was a Valentine’s Day baby and younger son, Ryan, celebrates his birthday on February 21st. Isabel Freeman Vogelson’s special day was February 7th. She shares the day with Allison Borg Bridges of Evolutions Hair Salon on Little East Neck Road. Isabel’s father, Dick Freeman, was born on February 19th. Judy Cooper of West Islip will also celebrate her day on February 14th. Patty Burke, President of the Pilot Club of Babylon, will enjoy her birthday on February 24th. Many happy returns to one and all!
•February is also Women’s Heart Month, Spunky Old Broad Month (should we form a club?), Bird- Feeding Month, Library Lover’s Month. Speaking of libraries, the 9th was "Read in the Bathtub Day". This week is "Love May Make the World go Round, but Laughter Keeps us from Getting Dizzy" week. In fact, February 8th was Laugh and Get Rich Day founded by Joel Goodman who said “seven days without laughter makes one weak” The Boy Scouts of America were founded 100 years ago this month (also February 8th).
•With more thoughts to Valentine’s Day, this is “Dump Your Significant Jerk Week” as well as International Flirting Week. Today is “Satisfied Staying Single Day.” You’d be surprised how many of the people you know would celebrate that!
Saturday, February 13th is 'Get a Different Name Day" for all those people not happy with the names they were given. I remember when I was back in third grade; I wanted a special name rather than just plain Mary Gallagher (half the girls in my class at St. Joe’s were named Mary). I decided to add a middle name that was definitely unique. But somehow when Mrs. Charles looked at my spelling test and said “WHO IS MARY TINKERBELL GALLAGHER?” I felt that perhaps I had made a mistake!
At that time, we celebrated Lincoln’s Birthday on February 12th and Washington’s Birthday on February 22nd. Now they’re combined into President’s Day, but frankly I think they both still deserve their own individual days as national holidays! President’s Day is rather blasé and neither President deserves to lose their holiday!
•February 17th is the 90th Anniversary of the League of Women Voters, an organization that we have to thank for much of the objective information we receive about political candidates.
And that’s all for now!
