SUCCESSFUL SEASON AT E.
DONALD CONROY GOLF COURSE.
Thegolf course is proving to be one of the most popular spots in the Village. Crowds of men and women, young and old, have flocked to the course for a round of play and to play on one of the leagues. The Women’s League champion this year was Christine De- Rienzo with a winning score of 58 and the Men’s League champion was Len Mulqueen with a score of 56. Both won 18-hole tournaments.
On Oct. 10, the course held its 6th annual Village Cup tournament. Forty golfers, representing 20 Village organizations, competed for the trophy. It proved to be an exciting match, with two teams tied for first place at the end of the 9-hole tournament with a score of 69. The winners who were tied for first place at the end of the tournament were the Babylon Chamber of Commerce team of Ricardo and Monica Benavides and the team from the Village Gold Course’s Men’s League of Pete Cirasoe and Len Mulqueen. The Men’s League team won the cup after an exciting play off on the 9th hole.
The Women’s League had 77 members play in its Rally for a Cure tournament on July 29 and the low gross winner with a score of 29 was Mary Alice Markham, and the low-net winner was Sheila McQuade with a score of 23. Shannon Kramer challenged the women to get the ball closer than she had on the 6th hole and only two golfers beat her. She raised $130, which the Men’s Club matched for a total of $260. On July 21, the Men’s Club had a member guest tournament, which was won by Tom Murry and Jake Brouliard with a score of 53.
CHRISTMAS IS THE SEASON FOR PARTIES, and we have several to tell you about. The Beacon, including folks from the Beacon, Amityville Record and Massapequa Post, held a lovely dinner party for all of its employees. We got to enjoy the delicious food at The Pier—everything from appetizers to dessert—with terrific main courses including a variety of seafood and meat. There was so much to choose from and all tasted as good as it sounded. It was great to greet and meet the people who bring us the papers each week.
•And, the Busy Women, held their annual Christ- mas party at Southward Ho. Mem- bers exchang e d gifts and there were gifts for children. Everyone enjoyed a beautiful concert, featuring Donna Hailey who sang O' Mio Babbino Caro by Puccini.
Florece Bell attended, representing the Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs. Charlotte Cabrino and Nancy Palazola presented readings of their recent writings. Jeanne Kitson, owner of Morgan Bay Candy, was another special guest. Jeanne brought a platter of homemade confections made by her company and we were lucky enough to each enjoy a sample offering—everyone raved about he candy. The shop is located on Post Place in the Village right near the public dock.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ON THE FLAG POLE on the southwest corner of Fire Island Avenue. The pole was put up back in the late 1980s by the Busy Women when Mary Freeman was the President and it is still standing there today, thanks to the Village which maintains it with love and care.
We want to wish our readers a very Happy New Year and to thank them for their support all year. Hope everyone had a nice Christmas and survived the blizzard without any mishaps.
