The women who brought the Fountain to Babylon

In the mid 19th Century women whose husbands had died or abandoned them fell on hard times. There were no opportunities for them to go out to work to support themselves and their children and unless they could move in with their families; their plight was one of enduring poverty. The number of women and children facing this fate rose dramatically following the Civil War.
