Heard it on the Grapevine

by Jane Warren
IT WAS LIKE A SCENE FROM “A CHRISTMAS CAROL” last weekend in Babylon Village. We’ll start with Friday evening when the streets were full of kids and their parents strolling the streets and getting an early start on their Christmas shopping before heading to the Conklin House to admire the beautifully decorated rooms. There were “Busy Women” sandwiches to enjoy and tasty cookies from the cookie bake contest. The place looked gorgeous and everyone had a fab time. The house was open for several hours on Saturday. Then on Sunday it was time for the tree lighting in Argyle Park with Santa arriving on a fire engine to the delight of the kids. Also on Sunday, the annual Wassail Bowl party was held at the Village Historical Society. Theytoo had a beautifully decorated tree. Judy Skillen’s granddaughters Jennifer and Kristi Melfidid the honors at the Wassail Bowl and did a finejob. Saw lots of friends: Marie Bohrer, Alice Zaruka, Helen and Vinnie O’Shea, Bruce Taylor, Sue Borg, Mary Gallagher, Karen Petz and Bruce Taylor. Jonathan Zemet put the tree up. There were so many helpers that it’s impossible to name them all. Jackie Marsden, president of the Historical Society worked tirelessly on the Wassail Bowl function as did Village historian Alice Zaruka. We extend our thanks to all who made the weekend such a memorable one. NEWLY PLANTED TREES IN THE VILLAGE. Yes, there are two newly planted Bradford Pear trees in front of the Masonic Temple on Montauk Highway. And one of them (we don’t know which one) is in memory of the late Gilbert C. Hanse who served as Mayor for 30 years, longer than anyone else in the Village or SuffolkCounty. HE’S NUMBER ONE Yes, we’re talking about Babylon Village’s runner, Jack Hanley who finished in first place in his group at the Marathon held on Nov. 22 in Philadelphia. Jack is a very active runner and competes in a number of local groups on Long Island. “Running is excellent for your health, and I’m thrilled that it has become so popular in our area,” Jack said. CALLING ALL OPRAH VIEWERS Our local author Beryl Menger, has been notified that the publisher of her book, Memories of a Blitz Brat, has mailed fivecopies to the Oprah program – one for each one of her staff to read. And closer to home, you may call Beryl at 587-3672 and order a copy for $12.95. What an ideal Christmas gift. THANKSGIVING HAS COME AND GONE, but we still have some Thanksgiving news to tell you about: Owen O’Neill and his wife traveled to Goshen, New York, to be with family and Steve Ferraro spent the big day with his daughter in Connecticut. Be sure and write to tell us your plans for Christmas so that we can include you in our column. AND THE LUCKY PRIZE WINNERS AT THE WASSAIL BOW WERE It’s all in the family – Linda Scordino was the winner of the beautiful painting of Argyle Park donated by Terry Santmann. Terry has been very active in the Splashes of Hope group which donated paintings to Hospitalized patients. Terry donated the painting to the Historical Society and Ralph Scordino says that he may hang it up in the Mayor’s office. It’s a painting of Argyle Park beautifully done. Another prize winner was Jean Teta who held the winning tickets for the beautiful wall hanging. OUR NEXT GOVERNOR? Will Rick Lazio be elected to the important post? His big-time supporters helped him to campaign for the Republican spot on the ballot at a dinner held at the Marriott last week. A large crowd was on hand to cheer him on. Rick was our Congressman for many years and his supporters are hoping he’ll return to public life. We’ll keep you posted. PEOPLE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE COMING OF THE FOUNTAIN in the Village. You probably received a brochure in the mail outlining the plan for the project which will be brought to us by the Babylon Village Fountain Reconstruction Project. We’ll be given assistance from our local governments, but additional funds will be needed in order to complete this worthwhile monument for our Village. So we ask you to give what you can spare to the Fountain Project c/o Valerie Fronzo, treasurer, 153 West Main St., Babylon 11702.
