I was sad to hear of the death of Henry Beaver Knox. A long-time resident of Babylon. Beaver sailed the Great South Bay for most of his life. Survived by his daughters, Connie and Barbara, the wake will be held at the Overton Funeral Home on Main Street in Bay Shore on Friday, November 20th. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 21st at the Episcopal Church in Babylon.

Don’t forget to attend this weekend’s book sale at the Babylon Public Library. Starting at 9:30 Saturday morning, November 21st, the Friends of the Babylon Library will hold the semi-annual book sale in the Community room. It will continue on Sunday, November 22nd at 1:00 a.m. Funds raised by the Friends help purchase programs and materials for the library. Last spring the Friends helped purchase a state of the art microfilm reader.

Happy Birthday greetings are sent out to Tom Bernagozzi and Linda Burke (November 4th), Susan B. (November 8th), Laura G. (November 15th), Ruth Hill (November 16th), and Lynne Fallon (November 22nd). November seems to have produced a great number of extra nice people!

ThePost OfficeCafé expects to have its expanded facility open for the holidays and has already started booking parties.

Speaking of openings, Gary Davis, owner of Argyle Flower & Garden, just east of Argyle Park, held a wine and cheese evening for friends and customers

recently to show off the store’s beautiful new Conservatory on the east side of the shop. The official ribbon-cutting will take place on the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping, Friday, December 4th. Babylon local, Kenny Rogers was the General Contractor and the conservatory was built and installed by Hampton Conservatories in Huntington. You don’t have to wait until December 4th to see it…stop in and check it out!

TheBabylon Library has several great programs open for the holiday season. On November 30th and December 7th you can make a Holiday Floor Cloth, on December 15th learn how to make a Gingerbread house and on Thursday, December 17th make a holiday centerpiece. (All three programs cost a nominal $3 each.) Be sure to pre-register at the library’s circulation desk.

Also at the Babylon Public Library, please donate to three very worthy projects. First, is a drive to collect items to send to our Troops overseas. Recommended items are: men’s and women’s toiletries, chap stick, sunscreen, playing cards and puzzle books, and non- perishable foods including tea, coffee,beef jerky, canned or dried fruits and hard candies. Do not wrap items. Thisis handled in conjunction with American Legion Post #94. The final pick-up date is December 15th.

A second collection is the annual Toys for Tots which needs new, unwrapped toys for children in need.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Holiday Food Drive for local families in need. Needed are non-perishable foods, canned foods, cereal, dog and cat food, pasta, flour, sugar, coffee,baby food, etc. With hard times, local

families are struggling even harder to make ends meet. If you want, buy a supermarket gift card and bring it to the circulation desk for the food drive. Thisallows the food pantries to purchase items they need most. From now until December 13th.

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving. Those of us with family and friends to celebrate with are especially blessed. If you know someone without those blessings, give them a call and, if you can, invite them to join you. When you celebrate Thanksgiving, don’t forget the Four Freedoms proposed by FDR in 1941: Freedom of Speech and Expression;

Freedom of Religion; Freedom from Fear; and Freedom from Want. Let’s all work to make them reality.

Your holiday schedule will hopefully include the following events: TheJames Street Players will present Follies

starting on Friday, November 20th. Sunday, November 29th the Babylon Beautification Society and hundreds of Babylon families will decorate light poles throughout the Village. December 4th will bring the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping in downtown Babylon. Shops will stay open late, there will be carolers and Santa will visit. December 6th is going to be a very busy day in Babylon Village. From 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. the Babylon Village Historical Society will host their annual Wassail Bowl. Many parents and their small children will make their way to Argyle Park at 4 p.m., where Mayor Scordino will light the Village Tree and Santa hopefully will arrive on a shiny fire truck! There’s also the Boy Scouts annual Spaghetti Dinner at the high school. Thefollowing weekend the Babylon High School Drama Club will present Les Miserables.
