Recently, the Babylon Fire Department hosted a training seminar given by Chief Scot Reed assisted by Petty Officers Steven Casey and Brian Meehan of the Fire Island Coast Guard Station. Members from the Town of Babylon Fire Departments that have Fire-Rescue Boats attended the training. Operational and safety procedures were discussed as well as search patterns, firefighting and rescue techniques. The Marine Units work hand and hand with both the Coast Guard and Suffolk County Police in the event of an emergency on the water.

As we enter into the 2009 boating season we would like to remind boaters about some basic safety tips:

Make sure all of your required safety equipment is on board and functioning.

Let someone know on land where you will be boating, when you are departing and returning.

Have a communications device on board to be able to summon help, either VHF radio or Cell Phone.

Check your fuel and outboard oil before you depart, have spare outboard oil on board just in case. Don't forget to run the blowers and make sure gas fumes are clear before starting the engine.

Keep a good eye on the weather it can change rapidly.

Make sure all children wear USCG approved life jackets or vests.

Make it a safe boating season and have fun!!!
