Town celebrates Earth Day; students recognized

More than 30 eco-friendly vendors were on site to educate the public about what they can do to preserve our environment. "I am happy to have sponsored a celebration of Earth Day within the Town of Babylon," said Supervisor Bellone. I made a commitment to myself, and the residents of the Town of Babylon, to do whatever I can to help preserve our environment and decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. TheTown of Babylon Earth Day celebration was a huge success. Many residents attended and were educated as to what each and every person can do to preserve our planet."

The highlight of the event was the awarding of scholarships to middle school students who submitted eco-tech science projects. The Town of Babylon in partnership with Babylon Covanta awarded over $2,900 in scholarships to 12 students from the Town of Babylon. The following students are winners in the Babylon-Covantage Ecotech Scholarship Program for 2009:

•Jessica Walsh - "Which piezoelectric material has the most potential to create a significant amount of power?" - Robert Frost Middle School, Deer Park, NY - Mrs. Ferro, Teacher-$500.00

•Emily Flaherty - "Are natural cleaning products more effective than regular name-brand cleaning products?" Babylon Junior/Senior High School, Babylon, NY - Mrs. Malone, Teacher-$300.00

•Justin Copeland - "Can manure heat your house or fuel a car?" - West Babylon Junior High School, West Babylon, NY - Ms. Poio, Teacher-$200.00

•Matthew Porcaro - "How do different growing mediums affect the amount of fertilizer detected in the water beneath?" Robert Frost Middle School, Deer Park, NY - Mrs. Ferro, Teacher-$100.00
