John Bartow, 45-year volunteer Babylon firefighter

Longtime Babylon Village resident and volunteer firefighter John M. Bartow died April 3, 2009.

Mr. Bartow was a dedicated member of the Babylon Fire Department Sumpwam Hose Co. #2 for 45 years and was the founder and coach of Babylon Kid Wrestling. He was also co-owner of Wright Plumbing & Heating.

He leaves behind his children: John J., Carol, Matthew and Patricia Sabiston; his grandchildren, who called him "Poppy:" Kim, Beth and Kelly Sabiston, Jonathan, Scott, Denise, Melissa and Lisa Bartow; his great grandchildren: Hayden and Madison; and his loving companion: Sharon Accettella. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan (DeGroot) Bartow.

Mr. Bartow reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip. The Village of Babylon Fire Department presented a firematic service. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Babylon.

John was such a nice person, I remember many times having to call him into La Grange, and leaving him to the task of finding the problem and solving it. And if you knew that place, well that was a task in it self!! Dedicated and determined is how I would describe him!
