Members of the Babylon community are getting ready to check to see whether their junior or senior high students will be receiving invitations to the Babylon Teachers Association Scholastic Awards Dinner. On Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 7 p.m., the Babylon Teachers' Association will sponsor its 34th annual dinner for the students in the Junior- Senior High School with the highest academic achievements. The dinner, given in the tradition of honoring those who have devoted themselves to academic pursuits, will take place at a new venue this year, the Huntington Hilton.

Roughly 80 students from grades seven through twelve and their families will be invited to attend, and the selected students will be honored with certificates of academic merit in all disciplines. In addition, the two students with the highest average (one in the junior high and one in the senior high division) will be awarded general excellence plaques. Lastly, eight monetary awards will be given to Seniors for their commitment, social responsibility, and scholarship in memory of eight teachers who exemplified these qualities during their many years of service to the Babylon UFSD.

This year's Scholastic Awards Committee is hard at work, ensuring that the accomplishments of Babylon's many fine students are recognized. The Scholastic Awards Dinner is chaired by Linda Fama, teacher of mathematics at Babylon Junior- Senior High School. Committee members also include Edward Augustine, Jane Herbst, Laura Jayne, Dennis Lally, Tracy Lesnick, Anne May, Christian Murphy, Marie Poelker, Eric Reisert, Barbara Restivo, Claire Reilly, James Schappert, and Valerie Schultheis.

The evening promises to be entertaining, conducted with the emcee talents of Edward Augustine, guidance counselor at Babylon Junior- Senior High School, and the guest speaker for the evening is Kerri Tricarico (neé Carpenter), the 1990 Babylon Valedictorian who now serves as the Controller for New York University. Once again, the Babylon Teachers' Association shows its commitment to quality education and service to their students and the Babylon community.
