Babylon HS students receive tips for journalism success
The Babylon High School Intro to Journalism class recently received some inside tips about succeeding in the professional world of writing when Newsday sportswriter Kimberley Martin visited the school. The course, which is new this year, is scheduled for eleventh and twelfth grade students and taught by Jim Schappert.
During her visit, Martin spoke with the students about how she got her start in journalism, the climate of the field, paper vs. Internet reporting, and techniques for fact finding when writing a story. The students enjoyed receiving her perspective on the field and asked a few insightful questions about the occupation.
"Always do what makes you happy," stated Martin, who prior to breaking into the journalism field worked at an investment management firm in Midtown Manhattan. "I always liked being around sports and being creative... eventually I found a way to do both things together."
Martin has worked at Newsday since November 2007.
