We had the opportunity of attending a Mets game at CitiField last week, the first game the Mets won in their new stadium. It is a fan-friendly, well thought out park with comfortable accommodations and everything needed to make a day at the ball game a great experience for families and fans.
Most impressive is the Jackie Robinson Rotunda that recognizes a man who did so much for baseball and for American society. The day we attended the game, Robinson's wife, daughter and son were on hand for ceremonies honoring No. 42. Every player that day wore Robinson's number, a touching tribute to baseball's first Black player.
What the field does not have, and what we would like to see, however, are memories of the Mets in all of their thrilling, heart breaking and heart-stopping moments. Across the top of the Rotunda, for example, historical photographs would add so much to the field. Why not have Jesse Orosco's photo as his knees gave out and he raised his arms to the sky in delight as the Mets won the 1986 World Series. Where are the impressive photos of Mr. Met, Tom Seaver or Dwight Gooden on the mound, Hernandez at first base or the inimitable center fielder, Mookie Wilson? Why not photographs of Casey Stengel or right fielder and power hitter Darrell Strawberry? We'd like to think that the field is still a work in progress and that these Met moments will be given their rightful place in the stadium they, and their fans, call their new home.
