After reading J.D. Salinger's novel Catcher in the Rye, students in James Schappert's tenth-grade English class and Katie McGrorty's ninthgrade English class at Babylon High School attended field trip to Central Park in New York City. The trip was designed to bring the novel to life by following the protagonist, Holden Caulfield's, shoes as the students had the chance to visit all the places in the park that had meaning to him and consequently symbolic meaning for the story.

"This trip has been something that I wanted to do for a few years and think it really helped the students understand the themes of this book by having them see firsthand the places that helped to shape J.D. Salinger's famous character," stated Schappert. "We also learned from our tour guide about the celebrated history of Central Park."

Shown in the photo, students in James Schappert's tenth-grade English class and Katie McGrorty's ninth-grade English class at Babylon High School took a tour of Central Park in New York City as a culminating activity to their study on J.D. Salinger's famous novel, Catcher in the Rye. The two classes are pictured here holding copies of the book.
