Suffolk County Police are investigating two unrelated incidents one in which a man died in a fire and the other in which a man was seriously injured in a bicycle accident. In the first incident, Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a Lindenhurst man who was apparently overcome by smoke after a fire broke out in his apartment. First Precinct police officers and the Lindenhurst Fire Department were called to 115 North Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst after a resident smelled smoke coming from apartment 2. When police arrived, they discovered the resident, Anthony Cuomo, 43, unconscious on a smoldering bedroom mattress. The smoke was extinguished, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician’s assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office. The origin of the smoke is under investigation by the Arson Section but it does not appear to be criminal in nature. An autopsy will be performed by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation is continuing. In the second incident Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist in Copiague today. An unidentified man was riding a bicycle on Great Neck Road, approximately 100 feet south of Edmonds Place, when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene at 4:13 p.m. The bicyclist is described as Hispanic, approximately 35 to 40 years old. He was wearing a green and blue shirt, blue jeans and work boots and riding a blue 10-speed bicycle. There is no description of the vehicle involved. The man was transported by Copiague Fire Rescue to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
