Jack Dugan, Lindenhurst resident and decorated Veteran
Jack Dugan Longtime Lindenhurst resident and loving family patriarch John "Jack" F. Dugan died Feb. 25, 2009 after a short illness at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. Mr. Dugan, who was 89, will be remembered by his great grandson Jack as "loving hugs more than anything."
He was born Nov. 27, 1919 in Brooklyn to John F. and Estelle C. (Pollack) Dugan. During World War II, he received several citations and medals for serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as Staff Sergeant based in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. For more than 55 years, he lived on 49th Street in Lindenhurst and spent his career with McGraw-Hill Publishers in Manhattan, working his way up from the mailroom to business manager.
According to his family, he enjoyed music and golf and was a gifted leatherworker. "He handcrafted beautiful pieces and sold them in many craft fairs and won first place ribbons in contests," said his son-in-law, Pat Dougherty who added that his father-in-law also taught himself to play brass instruments in his 70s.
Mr. Dugan leaves behind his children: Kathleen Dougherty and her husband Pat, John and his wife Susan, Michael and his wife Fern Gotfried and Eileen. His grandchildren, Kristine Dubyn and her husband Jeffrey,Christopher, Melanie and Michelle, and his great grandchildren, Jack and Aidan Dubyn also survive him.. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine G. in May 2004.
The Rev. Doctor Louise Stowe-Johns, pastor, First United Methodist Church in Amityville, officiated at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville. Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, with Military Honors.
