HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE
Alice Zaruka and Betty Hanse enjoy a bite to eat at the "Busy Women's" Scholarship fundraiser. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DEAY for the annual "Busy women" party held for the benefit of the Scholarship Fund a the lovely home of Fran and bob Pasch last Sunday. People were all so glad to see each other and "meet an greet" their friends and neighbors after all the snow and ice this winter. Some of those seen enjoying the delicious homemade goodies donated by the ladies were our mayor Ralph Scordino, Turstees Alice Vanderveldt, Kevin Muldowny, Debbie Basile and Lindsay Henry. Everyone was so happy to see Anita North (a former president and one of our hardest workers) up and about after having had surgery several months ago. Mary Rinklin, just back from a delightful cruise to Mexico and several other stops was there, looking terrific as she always does. The organization can always count on Legislator Wayne Horsley, and of course he made the scene. Thanks so much to "Jo Jo" Vanderveldt for his
professional bartending. And the lucky lottery winners were Alice Zaruka and her daughter Irene and Jeanne Ramsay. The winners took home baskets of food and wine. The real winners were the Babylon High School students who will be awarded scholarships towards their college education from the money raised at the very successful affair. Congratulations galore - let's start with our co-chairmen, Jill Corbett and Karen Deesing, Frank Pasch who made the great donation of letting us use her beautiful home for the festivities, and of course our hardworking, efficient President Clare Meirowitz who made it all happen. Score another hit for the oldest women's organization in the Village.
BETTER BABYLON CANDIDATES HARD AT WORK. They've been reaching out to the people at several coffee klatches. The first one was held at the home of Jack Corcoran of the Crescent. A large group of residents were on hand to ask questions about the community, and the candidates explained their commitment to the Village and pointed out that they always make decisions in the best interest of all of the residents. And Karen and Hank Kunkle also had a coffee klatch at their home. Again the residents asked questions about the Village - their main concern seemed to be the speeding in the area, and the candidates promised to work to improve the situation. They're also continuing their walking tour of Village homes.
A 50TH WEDDING CELEBRATION ABOARD THE HIGH SEAS Lee Ann and David D'Andrea of Babylon Village celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren on a cruise aboard Navigator of the Seas on the Royal Caribbean Line. They enjoyed visits to Key West and Cozumel. Family members who enjoyed the trip were Mary and Danny Oiel and their three children, Lisa and Kriss Guffrandsen and their two children and Donna and George Cornell, all of Amityville and David D'Andrea of Manhattan.
IT WAS A CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION at the Long Island Yacht Club. Two huge gorgeous dragons danced through the tables to everyone's delight, and delicious Chinese food was served. Some of those seen enjoying the fun were Olive Lazio (mother of our former Congressman Ricki Lazio - and now Rick is being mentioned as a candidate for Governor), club manager Noreen Decline, Marie and Bill France and Lois Boen, president of the Dix Hills Guild.
A 14TH GREAT GRANDCHILD FOR JOE LEONE. Patricia Ann Borgos Bianchi and Richard Alexander Leone Bianchi on Jan. 13 weighing in at six pounds. His maternal grandparents are JoAnn Leone Borgos and Stephen Borgos of Queensbury, New York and his maternal great grandparents are the late Margaret Leone and Joseph Barry Leone of Babylon Village.
QUILTERS HARD AT WORK The group that has been meeting once a week for years and making quilts for various organizations all around the world has recently completed 20 lap quilts for the Babylon Beach Hgouse, and have in the past made quilts to be raffled off for the Babylon Village Historical Society. The gifted quilters are Marta Arone, Karin Cotter, Ruth Crotty, Joesan Monroe, Doris Quarry, Anna Schmidt, Elizabeth Karoly, Alice Waters, and Marie Bohrer. Since renovations are going on at the Museum where the group has been working, they will have to suspend quilting there for the next six weeks.
SOME 200 WOMEN GATHERED AT THE HUNTINGTON HILTON at a pajama party for the benefit of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. The theme of the evening was old Hollywood and the gals dressed accordingly. Thanks to Chairman Debbie Basile, the party was a grand success, and raised much-needed funds for the Breast Cancer Coalition. And thanks to all who attended for this very worthy cause.
