Suffolk County Police arrested two men and charged them with possession of burglar's tools and attempted petit larceny after the men tried to break into cars parked at the United Artist movie theater in East Farmingdale.

First Precinct Crime Section, COPE, and uniformed patrol officers were conducting surveillance at the movie theater parking lot on Saturday, Jan. 10, following a rash of thefts from unoccupied parked cars in the area. Police officers Lisa Beane and Eric Denis saw a vehicle driving around the lot and eventually parking at about 10:30 p.m. Two men exited the vehicle and approached two cars that were parked next to each other. The men tried unsuccessfully to open the doors of the cars by pulling on the handles. When that failed, they tried to pry open the windows with a screwdriver. When approached by the officers, the men dropped the screwdriver and attempted to flee. They were apprehended and the screwdriver was recovered.

Denis Funes, 19, of 32 Hyde Park Ave., Bay Shore, and Yanic Flores, 18, of 197 Calebs Path, Brentwood, were each charged with one count of Possession of Burglars Tools and Attempted Petit Larceny. Both men will be held overnight at the First Precinct and arraigned at First District Court, Central Islip, Sunday, Jan. 11.
