Local veteran speaks to community about all those who served their country
The following was written by George Henry Kotz, a veteran and member of the American Legion Post #94 in Babylon, and was read at Veterans Day ceremonies recently. Mr. Kotz has a book of poetry coming out in March, and his words and prose have moved many at the numerous ceremonies and events at which he has spoken.
My fellow Americans we live today, in a free nation. Our freedom did not come easy. Our fighting men and women fought bravely to win this freedom, therefore we must continue to keep a trained force to insure a continued peace. Secondly between our Government and our veterans, our fighting men and women went into battle without hesitation, give them the care and benefits that they so justly deserve. I have composed the following poem in honor of all our loyal veterans. Hello America, remember me? I fought bravely to keep you free. I am the veteran who answered your call. To protect and defend you one and all. I am the veteran who spent months to years Defending a nation filled with many fears. Would the enemy invade our land, Forcing civilians to take a stand? I did not let that come about, For I made sure to keep the enemy out. I fought valiantly during the day and throughout the night, With my heart and soul I gave it all my might. There were thousands of others like me Who fought for our country in air, on land and sea. Many brave souls never returned alive, We the fortunate ones still survive. Some of us came through it all unscathed, Others have scars they will take to the grave. Dear America, please never forget Your all-giving protector, your loving vet. By George Henry Kotz
