The Village of Babylon has done a great deal of work in protecting the bodies of water which surround this beautiful community. From the Great South Bay to Carlls River to Sumpwams Creek, efforts have been underway to ensure that rainwater runoff, the most toxic waste for waterways, is cleaned and purified before it empties into those bodies of water.

The Village has worked to adapt a smart sponge or chemical absorbent drain, to the needs of Babylon in a unique program that is now getting the attention of the County and the State. New drainage and other projects have made Babylon as one County official called it "a model" community when it comes to protecting the environment.

Some of this work was done with County, State and Federal funding, and because of Babylon's success, more is on its way. What should not be lost here, however, is the fact that this entire program was the vision of Babylon officials, and much of it was accomplished with local manpower. To its credit, Babylon has not only helped protect the quality of its waterfront life for the future but also provided a blueprint for other communities to follow suit.
