Red Sherrill, former Lindenhurst resident and volunteer

Longtime Lindenhurst resident and active community member Holton "Red" Bost Sherrill died Nov. 29, 2008 in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was 98.

He was born in Mountain Creek, North Carolina and moved to Lindenhurst in 1932 to run the Mirror Barber Shop. He lived on Third Avenue for 39 years. In 1943 he went to work for Prudential Insurance Company. He retired in 1971 and moved to Florida. In 1980 he relocated to North Carolina.

During World War II, Mr. Sherrill served in the U.S. Coast Guard based at the Fire Island and East Moriches lighthouses.

During his time in Lindenhurst, he was involved in many aspects of the community. He was a longtime parishioner of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of the Lindenhurst Historical Society, the Sunrise Squire Club, the Breslau Cemetery Board, the Amityville Masonic Lodge, Suffolk County Life Underwriters, the Boy Scouts of America. and was a volunteer Lindenhurst firefighter and its rescue squad. In North Carolina, he continued to volunteer much of his time.

"My father was a very generous man to all causes and all people," said his daughter Pat Schember Sherrill of North Carolina.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Sherrill also leaves behind his sister, Evelyn Sherrill Smith and his grandchildren, Donald and his wife Roxanna, Ronald and his wife Jo Ann, and Scott and his partner Katie Michaelis. His great grandchildren, Andrea, Melissa, Jacob, James, Mark and Jaclyn also survive him as does his step family, Darien Vogelsberg and husband Walter, Carter Lunt and wife Pat, Clint Lunt and wife Theresa, Lisa Durler, and all their families; his nieces and nephews: Loyce Davis, Joyce Height, John Sherrill, Lynn Alsop, Paulette Turner, Donald Sherrill, Kathy Troutman, Lloyd Smith, Brenda Smith, Jerry Smith and Michael Smith. He was predeceased by his parents: Lloyd and Eula Estelle Bost Sherrill; his first wife of 58 years, Vesta Ann Mack Sherrill; his second wife, Elenor Lunt Sherrill; his son Blane and his brothers, John, Lester, Heath and Cornelius.

He reposed at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home on Dec. 5, 2008 followed by interment in Breslau Cemetery, Lindenhurst.
