Mary McDonough, volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital and Thrift Shop
Lifelong Amityville resident Mary "Mazie" G. Mc- Donough died Nov. 24, 2008 at Broadlawn Manor Nursing Home in Amityville. She was 82 years old.
She was born Mary Kretz on Aug. 17, 1926 to Mae G. McDonnell and James W. Kretz on Sterling Place. A graduate of Amityville High School where she was an outstanding field hockey player, she also lived on Oak Street, South Bayview and most recently on Avon Place in Amityville.
She dedicated her life to caring for her family and home. In her spare time, she loved to garden, golf, refinish furniture and read.
"She simply loved her family and loved being around us," said her daughter Claire Wilensky of Amityville. "She was also proud to be an American and of her Irish ancestry."
She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church and a volunteered for both the hospital and thrift shop of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. McDonough leaves behind her other children, John and his wife Peg, Michael, Timothy, Daniel and his wife Leanne, and Dennis and his wife Patricia. Her son-in-law Matt Wilensky and her grandchildren, Kerry, Erin, Maureen, Jenny, Mary, Mick, Faith, Daniel, Dennis and Allie also survive her as do her 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1981, and her grandson Ryan.
Mrs. McDonough reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville. A Funeral Mass was said on Nov. 28, 2008 at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, Amityville, followed by interment in Trinity Cemetery.
