TOB Historical Society looking for public support to build replica of Marconi shack
The Town of Babylon Historical Society announced that plans are underway to build a historical replica of the Guglielmo Marconi Wireless Radio Station which operated in Babylon Village from 1902 to 1907 as Babylon Station BA. The station was located on Fire Island Avenue and Virginia Road and was moved to the RCA radio transmitting station at Rocky Point, Long Island, in 1930 as a historical artifact for safekeeping.
With the cooperation of Town of Babylon Supervisor Steven Bellone, Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon has been selected as the proposed location for the replicated wireless station. Also assisting in this replication effort is Wayne Horsley, Suffolk County Legislator, 14th District.
The replicated wireless station will be used to support scientific education for students and foster an understanding of how the developments in radio transmission by Marconi and others in the late 19th and early 20th century have had far-reaching benefits to our modern society (e.g. cell phones). The Town of Babylon Historical Society hopes that the replicated wireless station will not only promote an interest in local history, but also generate an interest in scientific education and careers.
The construction and teaching efforts will be administered and supervised, on a volunteer basis, by Ciro T. De Rosa, Ph.D., and Frederick A. Zito, Ph.D., prominent educators, members of the Town of Babylon Historical Society, and longtime residents of the Town of Babylon.
The Town of Babylon Historical Society has launched a campaign to raise $25,000 for the construction of the building, a protective fence, and a ratio antenna. All donations collected in this campaign will be used for construction of these historic structures. Checks should be made out to the Babylon Town Historical Society - Marconi Wireless History committee. All donations will be gratefully acknowledged. All donations are tax deductible.
The cooperation of the general public and local businesses is respectfully and urgently solicited. Donations and inquiries may be directed to: Babylon Town Historical Society, Post Office Box 2181, North Babylon, NY 11703, Attention: Joan M. Smedley, President.
The Town of Babylon Historical Society urges residents to participate in this worthwhile project to further scientific education and preserve this significant part of local history.
