Babylon boys take Cross Country title

The Babylon High School Varsity Boys Cross Country Team won the Section XI Class C Suffolk County Championship at Sunken Meadow State Park on Friday, Oct. 31. Under coach Ed Augustine, the Panthers defeated Port Jefferson, Mattituck, Center Moriches and Hampton Bays to take their second county title in four years.

Juniors Luke Merz and Ian Mathies placed first and second, respectively, in the 5000 meters over the rugged and hilly course. 8th grade phenom Tyler McGarvey placed fifth. Seniors Kyle Yantz and Justin Maharana, junior Matteo Leser and sophomore James Capie ranked high, as well. The Panthers edged the Port Jefferson Royals for the top spot, 31-37.

On Sat., Nov. 8, the team competed again at Sunken Meadow, representing the county in the New York State Public School Championships.
