Local resident wins tallest sunflower contest

Michael and Taylor Quinones of Deer Park were named the winners of Long Island Game Farm's Tallest Sunflower Contest. Their sunflower, which they named Sunshine, grew to a height of eight feet, nine inches. They planted the seeds at their home in April. Seeds were provided by The Garden Spot in Center Moriches.

"We planted one sunflower in a partially sunny area and one in a fully sunny area," they said. "the one in the full sun grew twice as fast and three times as tall."
