Obituaries Kevin McManus, decorated Vietnam veteran, raised in Babylon, at 65

Decorated U.S. Air Force pilot and Pentagon employee Kevin Joseph Mc- Manus, who survived being a prisoner of war in Vietnam, died July 31, 2008 at his Oakton, Virginia home after a battle with lung cancer. The 65-year-old was

born, and was raised in Babylon, earned Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Sat with a "V," the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Hearts, the POW Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal for his service.

He graduated from St. Joseph Elementary in Babylon in 1956, Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn in 1960 and the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1964. He went on to pilot F4's with the 92nd Tactical Fighter's Squadron in England and the 390th TFS at the Danang Air Base in Vietnam. His plane was shot down in North Vietnam and he was captured with his USAFA classmate Edward J. Mechenbier and held for five years and eight months.

After coming home in 1973 and being told his injuries would not allow him to fly again, he moved to Durham, North Carolina with his wife, Mary Jane, and graduated from Duke University. For a time he worked for Fairchild Republic and moved to Setauket until 1979 when the family moved to Herndon, Virginia and he took a job at the Pentagon in the Department of Defense. After retiring from the Air Force in 1984, he went on to work for a program management firm at AT&T and finally retired at 1999.

According to his family, he loved to read, garden and collect baseball cards and stamps. He was also a talented carpenter who had a passion for Italy.

Mr. McManus leaves behind his wife of 41-years, Mary Jane (nee Cahill) of Oakton, Virginia; his children: Katherine Mary of Arlington, Virginia, Bryan Jude and Marie Therese of Arlington, Virginia, John Francis and Mary Elizabeth Seton of Oakton, Virginia and Mary of Eagle, Colorado; his siblings: Karen Julia of Alexandria, Virginia, Robert Philip of Massapequa and Christopher George of Washington, D.C. He was predeceased by his son: Kevin Roderic (Rory).

He reposed at the Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, Virginia on August 11, 2008. A Funeral Mass was held August 12, 2008 at St. Timothy Church in Chantilly, Virginia . Burial, with military honors, to be held at Arlington National Cemetery on October 16, 2008 at 11 a.m.
