Suffolk Police investigate sinking of Marine Bureau boat

The Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau pulled one of their own boats from the water after it sank this afternoon.

The 38 foot Thomas aluminum police boat sank around 3:30 p.m. when it was tied to the dock at Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island. The boat sank to the bottom of the bay, with about three feet of the vessel still above water. There was no one was on board. The boat was raised around 9 p.m. and towed to Marine Bureau headquarters at Timber Point.

It is believed that a mechanical failure caused water to fill the hull, causing the boat to sink.

The police investigation is continuing.
