Ascension in Deer Park wins Lutheran Congregation of the Year

More than a thousand pairs of new socks distributed to the street people of New York City, 200 Christmas packets given to women living in shelters on Long Island, Sunday School serving 140 children, over 70 children involved in its youth program, four dynamic worship services weekly, a new ministry to the Latino members of the community and the youth making more than 4,800 peanut butter sandwiches to feed the hungry of our community were just a few of the reasons Ascension Lutheran Church at 33 Bay Shore Rd., Deer Park, was chosen as Lutheran Congregation of the Year.

The award came with a plaque and a gift of $10,000 which Ascension plans to use to further its outreach of caring to the Long Island community it serves. Dr. David Hahn, headmaster of Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School, presented the honor at the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services at Ascension on March 8. The award was made possible through the Lutheran Crusader Fund which is administered by Lutheran High School. The award was granted to Ascension in recognition that it serves as a model for other ministries by effectively sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and helping God's people in need.

More than 350 people worship weekly at Ascension at one of five worship services. Along with the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services, there is a Saturday evening service at 6 p.m. There are two Latino worship services weekly, one on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and one on Thursday evening at 8 p.m.

Other reasons Ascension was selected Congregation of the Year were: Its raising over $100,000 in support of missions in Tanzania, its ecumenical involvement in the community, having 100 adults involved in bible study, its making 5,600 shawls for shut-ins and those residing in community nursing homes and its providing the community space for many different 12 step programs. Ascension welcomes anyone who is not currently active in another house of worship to come and be part of its dynamic ministry.
