Police arrest WB man for stealing money from West Islip Church

Suffolk County Police  arrested a West Babylon man for stealing from the poor boxes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip.

Matthew Corwin, 20, of 858 Sunrise Highway, West Babylon, stole money on two occasions from a poor box after taking it from the lobby.  The exact amount stolen is unknown due to the nature of anonymous donations but Corwin admitted to stealing more than $20 each time.

The incidents occurred around January 5 and May 3 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 455 Hunter Ave., West Islip.  During the investigation Third Precinct Crime Section Officers Theodore Martinez and John Oakley learned Corwin would remove the money from the box on the premises.  Corwin says he was familiar with the location because he attended meetings there. Each incident was caught on video surveillance cameras.

Corwin was charged with two counts of Petit Larceny and two counts of Criminal Mischief 4th Degree.  He will be arraigned May 6 at First District Court in Central Islip.
