Deer Park's School coach named Coach of the Year

The Spirit of Golf Foundation (SGF) is pleased to announce that Eddie Merrins will present the annual SGF Coach of the Year Award to Matthew P. Jeran, a teacher and golf coach in the Deer Park School District. The presentation took place in January at the annual Spirit of Golf Foundation meeting in Orlando, Florida. Named after Mr. Merrins who is Golf Professional Emeritus, the SGF Coach of the Year is awarded to an SGF Certified Coach who most closely aligns their professional and personal attributes to the guidelines Mr. Merrins himself has lived by during his most prestigious career.

As a high school science teacher at Deer Park High School in Deer Park, Jeran founded and organized the first Deer Park High School Falcon golf team and coached the team to back-to-back League I Championships in 2005 and 2006. As a beginning coach in 1999, Matt took the SGF manual Coaching Golf Successfully and adopted it as his "Bible." Going from 0-12 in the first year of the golf program to 14-0 in the ninth year with sectional, conference and league championships, Jeran led his team members to excel in scholastics as well as golf. Several of his players have gone on to the collegiate level on scholarships. Matt teaches his players to "Take care of the fundamentals and the successes will come on their own." He credits SGF with giving Deer Park Falcon golf respectability and credibility among Section XI golf coaches in New York State.

Moving to Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York last year as Assistant Golf Coach, Matt is presently recruiting for the team and working under Hall of Fame Coach Larry Dell Aquila. He continues to use the SGF resources and hopes to organize an area Suffolk Chapter of SGF to show his dedication as a steward of the game of golf.

"We are honored to name Matthew P. Jeran as SGF's Coach of the Year. By his example he has developed a winning golf program and continues to dedicate his time to young people and the game of golf.," said Bill Madonna, SGF Director.
