On Feb. 26, Girl Scout Troop 1043 of Babylon Village had a ceremony to receive their Bronze Award. The award can be earned by Junior Girl Scouts between the ages of nine and 12 years old. It is an award that takes many hours of work and culminates in a special community service project. Troop 1043 worked on the qualifications for this award for one and one half years. They did a year-long project for the 9/11 Memorial at Cedar Beach in Babylon. The girls did clean-ups, plantings and special projects for the Memorial , all with the help of Ralph Ascoli, who on 9/11 lost his daughter. Ascoli took his grief and created a place to memorialize all that was good about the people of the Town of Babylon that lost their lives on that day. The Scouts of Troop 1043 dedicated their award to the memory of Debbie Mannetta, Ascoli's daughter.

The Troop will continue to do community service at the Memorial for years to come. S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley and Councilwoman Ellen McVeety who is also the chairman of the Town of Babylon 9/11 Hometown Memorial Foundation were on hand to present special awards.
