World Math Day at Captree School in West Islip

More than 20,000 schools around the world participated in World Math Day- which turned out to be extended to World Math Week- in March. Among them was Justin DeMaio's fifth grade class at Captree Elementary School in West Islip.

A unique event that gave children the opportunity to compete mathematically with their peers in other countries, Math Week helped students enhance their arithmetic skills while having a great deal of fun in the process. Joey Rushton (pictured at his computer) competed with a youngster in the United Kingdom. "It's really cool," he declared. "This is the most fun I've had in math."

Classmate Taylor Walsh (pictured wearing pink and seated near Principal John Mullins) had high score of the day on March 7th, showing a 61 percent improvement over her participation on March 5th.

According to Mr. DeMaio, the students enjoyed playing in real-time with their peers around the globe. The math questions were appropriately leveled for age and ability. For more information see www.worldmathday.com
