Leg. Stern participates in “Teens on the job shadow day”
Suffolk County Leg. Steve Stern (D-Huntington) recently joined fellow legislators for Long Island's Teens On the Job Shadow Day at the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge. This program is offered every year on Groundhog Day to sophomores throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties and gives students an opportunity to experience a day in the workplace in a variety of different fields. Legislator Stern hosted Taweh Beysolo and Evan McPartland, sophomores from Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington.
The Legislators each explained to the students how they came to public service and encouraged them to pursue careers in government. Students had the opportunity to participate in a mock legislative debate around the "horseshoe" and they voted on a bill after the Legislators offered their own testimony. The students also learned about the role of Legislative Counsel in advising legislators, the budget review office, the relationship between the Legislative and Executive branches and energy policy. Students also saw presentations from the Office of the Medical Examiner, the Sheriff 's Office, the Health Commissioner and the County Attorney's Office.
"I was thrilled to be a part of this valuable and exciting program and happy to give students the opportunity to participate in public service for the day," said Leg. Stern.
