Long Island Presidents' Council announces finalists for annual school essay contest

The Long Island Presidents' Council, an association of teachers' union presidents, has selected finalists for their eighth annual School Essay Contest. This year's title was Why I Like Going Back to School in September.

The contest was open to Long Island students, kindergarten through 12th grade, from districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Twelve finalists were selected from thousands of essays submitted. Each finalist was asked to submit a taped recording of the winning essay. Final selections were based on content, clarity, sincerity and spoken delivery.

From our area the finalists are: Jake Varone, a kindergartner, Fifth Avenue School, Bay Shore and fourth grader Jack Van Dyke, South Country School, Bay Shore.
