Editorial Some school districts, in an effort to reduce childhood obesity and to help students develop healthier eating habits have laid down rules against fattening and sugar-laced products such as cupcakes, candy and soda. While we believe that it certainly is admirable for schools to take on this responsibility and to educate children about the kinds of food that are good- and bad- for them, we think that in some cases this lesson has gone too far, banning all sweets outright. As with other prohibitions, the reaction is often the opposite and the banned items become more enticing than before. Instead, schools should continue instructing students about good health and encourage fewer sweet treats. But they also have to give youngsters the opportunity to learn how to make good choices. Doing it for them is not the way and it teaches them nothing about self control and discipline.
