Babylon students meet their favorite authors

Shown in the photo Ms. Mastrandrea's fourth grade class with Vivian Farrell.
On Feb. 5 the Babylon K-6 held the Author Illustrator Night at the elementary school. The night consisted of authors and illustrators in a very relaxed setting talking to and answering all the children's and adult's questions about their works.

There was Brian Heinz, author of books like The Alley Cat and The Monster Test. Also attending was Josephine Nobisso, author of Hot Cha Cha. These two authors will be visiting the grade school this year to do programs for the students.

Also in attendance was author Vivian Farrell who wrote Robert's Tall Friend: A Story of the Fire Island Lighthouse. Farrell visited the grade school on Feb. 4 to do a program for the fourth graders who later this year will visit the Fire Island Lighthouse.

Over 100 books and 30 author illustrators were on hand. The students were able to purchase the books and get them autographed by the authors and illustrators. The idea of being able to hear the story of a book by the author of the book was very exciting to these young children. This Author Illustrator Night was also the kick off for the grade school parents as Reading Partners Read-a-thon. The theme this year is Reading Works, Read to Succeed. The idea is to get the kids to realize that reading can help them to succeed in any hobby, job, career or anything they want to achieve and succeed at. The students will be reading through levels of school to eventually achieve their graduation from college and their dream job. In the end they will have graduated to the You Have Succeeded Wall.
