W. Babylon student recognized for heroism
by Tom Brennan

Last year, Neil Cella, a first-grader Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District, wrote a report for Fire Prevention Week. In it, he described a plan of action he would undertake in the event of a fire or other emergency.

That lesson apparently served the 7-year-old well. On Feb. 2 of this year, the youngster saw smoke coming from the wall above the fireplace in his home. At the time, his father, Rich was in the shower and his mother, Audrey was taking a nap with his 16-month-old brother, Mathew. Acting quickly, the youngster got his four-year-old sister Alison to leave the home, and then went to alert his parents to the danger. The family all got out of the home safely, but had to relocate to a hotel for a week while their home underwent repairs as a result of damage from the fire.

Neil was recently honored for his actions by the Town of Babylon. In giving Neil the award, Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone said Neil is to be commended for recognizing danger, and not panicking.

"You did the right thing by going to your parents and preventing something that could have turned out very bad," said Bellone

Audrey Cella, Neil's mother, said she was proud of her son for what he did. "That plan he wrote last year turned out to be very helpful," she said.

Neil accepted the award graciously, but took it all in stride. when asked how he felt, he said, simply "good."

Meanwhile his mother considers her family very fortunate, and when speaking of her son's actions, she said that every parent hopes that their children react as calmly and effectively as Neil did in the event of an emergency. "We're lucky it happened on a Saturday afternoon and not in the middle of the night- and we are very lucky we have such an alert son," she said.
