Deer Park students test their knowledge of Marine Science at Scallop Bowl Deer Park High School recently participated in the prestigious Seventh Annual Bay Scallop Bowl. Hosted by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University and sponsored by the Alfred Jane Ross Foundation, New York Sea Grant and Blue Ocean Institute, the Scallop Bowl invites 16 high school teams, comprised of five students each to test their knowledge of marine science. Specifically, this year's questions focused on the significance of the ocean and its relevance to global climate change. This topic included questions in fields ranging from marine chemistry, biology, geology, law and literature.
The 2008 Bay Scallop Bowl was Deer Park High School's fourth year of competition and included senior players Arjun Dhawan and Allison Nunez and sophomore teammates Robert Rotchford and Abdul Mirza. During the daylong event, students met with guest speakers Congressman Tim Bishop, State Senator John Flanagan, Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher and Stony Brook Dean of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Dr. David Conover.
