Congressman Israel hosting meeting on stimulus payment

Congressman Steve Israel will be holding a Tax Help Town Hall Meeting at Deer Park High School (30 Rockaway Avenue) April 5 at 11 a.m. to make sure Long Islanders get the money to which they are entitled under the economic stimulus plan passed by Congress.

To receive a stimulus payment, individuals must have a valid Social Security number, have earned at least $3,000 of income in 2007 and must file a 2007 federal tax return. Eligible individuals will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples) and $300 for dependents. Americans who are typically exempt from filing a tax return, such as seniors with low incomes and disabled veterans must file a tax return this year to receive a check.

IRS officials and tax experts will be present to help answer questions. There will also be counselors on hand to provide free tax filing services to Veterans and Social Security recipients. If you would like to attend or if you have additional questions, please call my Hauppauge office at (631) 951-2210. You can also learn more about the stimulus checks on my website at http:/ /israel.house.gov.
