Lawmakers join residents in opposing plan for LaGrange; ask town to have hearings in WI
"As someone who has lived in this hamlet for more than 50 years and who has represented West Islip in the state and currently in the Suffolk County legislator, I vehemently oppose it," said Barraga. The two lawmakers have contacted Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan and asked that any zoning meeting currently required to allow the plan to move forward, take place in West Islip. The plan calls for tearing down most of the extensions to the historical portion of the building, refurbishing it according to historic standards, and then moving it back on the site approximately 25 feet north of its current site. The building would house a bank and offices. A Walgreen's would be constructed on the west side of the site and be designed to compliment the historical La Grange. Lisa Pace, Esq., the attorney representing Walgreen's said that following the heated meeting March 13, the developers are planning to reach out to the various segments within the community, gain their input and revise the plan to accommodate the wishes of the community as much as they can. A zoning meeting is likely to be held off until that work id done.
"We do not want to force something on the community that they don't want," she said.
