WB Lacrosse League asks Town Board to intervene in field snafu
by Carolyn James

All they want, they said, is a level playing field and members of the West Babylon Lacrosse League

WBLL) appeared before the Babylon Town Board last Wed., asking Supervisor Steve Bellone and Council members to intervene on their behalf. The WBLL wants to have access to the turf field behind Our Lady of Grace Church on Albin Avenue, but said that the Town Park's Department has rejected their application.

"This organization needs more space," said Frank Bustamante, vice president of the West Babylon Taxpayers Association.

Michael Hoffman, Esq., a resident of West Babylon and attorney who represents the League pro bono said the club was formed five years ago to address the growing demand for lacrosse teams.

"We responded to the needs of children who wanted to play lacrosse," he said. "We have tremendous talent here in West Babylon, but do not have the infrastructure to teach kids from a young age."

The WBLL serves approximately 100 boys and girls in grades 1-6, and the teams play nine months of the year.

Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone said that he did not know why the Parks Department made the decision it did, but would reach out to them and work to resolve the issue.

"Our top priority is to make sure as many kids as possible have the ability to play for as long as possible," Bellone told the large group of coaches, players and their families who attended the meeting. "The Parks Department executes that role and philosophy, and what I am gong to do is discuss this with them to see what can be done."

Ray Cody, another member of the league, said that another group currently uses the field, but that the field is large enough to accommodate both.

"In fact, he said, after each of us gets done practicing we can have the teams scrimmage, which would be the best thing for all the kids in the community."

The grouped thanked Bellone for his offer to work on their behalf and for the work his administration has done to improve and expand fields within the Town of Babylon.

"We need space and we want opportunities for our kids," said a league official, Bill Martocci. "When those fields were built, they called them the field of dreams; we want that dream for our kids."
