West Islip's Oquenock rocks into reading with PARP

West Islip's Oquenock Elementary School opened its annual PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) assembly, sponsored by the PTA, with author Saragail Katzman Benjamin of Joyful Noise Entertainment Programs. Weaving story, rhythm and song into an interactive experience, Benjamin spoke to the youngsters about "letting creativity flow." Oquenock's 2008 PARP program , titled "Rock into Reading," invites parents to encourage and share the reading of books and musicals, visiting the public library, and learning about CDs. Last fall's Harris Poll concluded that those who participated in musical programs were more successful academically. Music and book clubs teach children to work in group settings and become more disciplined, while offering levels of personal fulfillment.
